With this website, I would like to offer prospective owners/operators the option to become
fully versed with the details of the process of sulphur oxides (sulphur dioxide / sulphur
trioxide) removal from industrial tail gases. There is no charge nor obligation on the parts of
the owners/operators for this service.
The subject SULFACID process was developed in the mid 1960’s by the Lurgi GmbH company
and subsequently granted a patent in 1968.
Although the process offers a very elegant technical solution for the above mentioned task, it
still leads a niche existence, as the product is weak sulphuric acid with a concentration up to
approx. 14 wt%. Due to its corrosive nature and the relatively low cost for commercially
available sulphuric acid (98.5 wt%), the sale or the transport of weak acid is not economically viable.
Therefore this process is normally only suitable where the product may be consumed at the same location e.g. for tail gas
cleaning in the titanium dioxide production industry by means of the sulphate process.
More detailed information about the process can be found in a
professional article that I authored and published in the
year 2000 in the technical magazine cav (in German language).
